Termite Pest Control

termiteSpring is when many insects begin anew. Some start with only a fertile queen. Some have gone dormant in winter and emerge when temperatures are warm. Some are active through winter and use spring as a time to send out reproductives. Such is the case with termites. Although spring is most likely the time to see termite activity, these insects are hard at work year round. Spring is when most termite colonies send out reproductives, or swarmers, and this “swarm” indicates a termite infestation. Properly identifying termites can save property damage, time and money.

Facts

Termites do not like to expose themselves so they build dirt tunnels through which they travel. These will be readily seen on foundation walls, studs inside wall voids and on sill plate on top of foundation walls. Their tunnels are used to carry food, stabilize temperature and regulate moisture. They  also allow termite swarmers to exit the colony.   Swarmers are generated once or twice a year and do nothing but leave an existing colony in search of another location where they can start a new colony.

Badger Pest Control

Many thanks to BugSpray.com for contributing this article.

American BadgerBadgers are medium sized mammals which have broad heads, short strong legs and a bushy tail.  Their front claws are long, designed for digging and they have a black patch on each cheek. There is a white line which runs over the top of their head which extends from its nose. Badgers average around 20 pounds but can exceed weights of 30 pounds if local food supplies allow for good growth. On average, males are larger than females.

Location

Found throughout much of the central and western states, most every state west of the Mississippi has badgers; the open country of the plains states is where they prefer and seldom do populations exist where there are heavy forests.  Badgers will readily live along coastal waterways and exist at altitudes in excess of three miles.

Facts

Badgers are members of the weasel family and have the characteristic “musky” odor associated with these animals. Either females or males will dig burrows but the females den will always be longer and deeper. This insures a protective environment for growing young. Badgers breed during the summer and fall but implantation of embryos are delayed; gestation begins around February and young are born in early spring. Litters average 3-5 animals.  Offspring may begin to reproduce in their first year of life if born early but most will not until their second year. Badgers live an average of 6-9 years but it is not uncommon for them to live over 12 years in the wild.

The common solutions to the problem such as chemicals and baits fail to accomplish the job and leave the mole as free as ever and the home owner disappointed. Don’t fall into the same mistake or if you have, discover the true way to conduct mole control.

Do It Yourself Mole Removal

Some may say that the only way to solve a mole problem is to hire out to some certified pest control company, but this simply isn’t true. Although it is a possible solution, many homeowners may find it easier to spend a little time on learning the tricks of mole control and in the process avoid breaking budget.

Mole Identification

Essential to every home owner’s mole control toolkit is the ability to identify a mole when it appears, and know the differences between its habits and other similar creatures. A mole produces 1-1/2 foot wide mounds which are dome in shape and completely circular. This is in contrast to the U shaped mounds of the pocket gopher and the lack of mounds with the vole. When you see hills several feet apart with ridge tunnels as well, you most likely have a mole in your lawn.

Hiring a Pest Control Company

Pest Control At WorkWhen you consider hiring a pest control company, it is a good practice to keep these top 7 things in mind.

1. All Pest Control Companies are NOT the same

There are companies who will accomplish their job quickly and smartly and there are those who will fail to do what you ask and rip you off in the meantime.

2. Don’t Accept Firm Prices

If a pest control company gives you a firm fixed price without first fully investigating and inspecting your situation, do not hire. Look for companies who offer reasonable quotes based on your specific problem and go with them. They are much more likely to do a good job and solve all your specific needs.

3. Determine Their Past Customer Satisfaction Rate

Does the company in consideration have a good relationship with their past customers? Were people satisfied with the service? Essentially, this boils down to referrals. Unless you are interested in possibly lousy service, ask for referrals and determine whether the company does their job well before hiring.
